Tummy time/neck strength

Hi. Hoping for some reassurance and advice. My little boy is nearly 8 weeks old. He hates tummy time in the floor and cries as soon as I put him down. I’ve tried black and white picture cards/books/toys and getting down on the floor too but he just hates it. He is happy lying on his tummy on my chest though and will lift his head to look at me from there.

We had a HV visit a few days ago and she was a bit concerned that he won’t try and lift his head when she was pulling him up by his arms. She advised to keep trying with tummy time on the floor to help build his muscles and mentioned that I’m probably holding him too much and he won’t ever learn to roll if he is always held or in his Moses basket.

I wasn’t worried about his development until the HV visit. He is smiling and reacting to
voices and noises and is a happy wee guy most of the time. As mentioned, he will lift his head when on someone’s chest too.

Any ideas for helping him to enjoy tummy time?

I'm not a HCP so this might not be the right answer but if he's happy and lifting his head in your chest, I'd just keep doing that.
