8 month old weighing 15.1kg

I have made an appointment with the HV but I guess I’m just looking for reassurance or similar experiences.. my 8 month old weighs 15.1kg! He has always been a big baby, exclusively breastfed and really hasn’t taken much interest in solids. Barely eats any solids but does breastfeed every 3 or 4 hours. And has been off the percentile charts since he was 8 weeks. He went up to 6-9 month clothes at 8 weeks, and now at 8 months he’s currently in 18-24 months clothes, and they are starting to look a bit small on him.

I just thought he was a big baby, but actually having a Google I saw that this weight is actually quite worrying for a baby of his age and it can mean something is wrong. Has anyone else had a baby this big or have any similar experiences.

Has he been meeting milestones?

crawling?

withthischoice · 05/01/2024 08:55

any other children?

their weights?

OneDay1234 · 05/01/2024 12:43

@withthischoice he isn’t crawling but i think he’s not far off. He can go from tummy to sitting and back. He isn’t babbling, which is another concern I have. I have a 3yo daughter and she was on the larger side but nothing like we’re seeing with my son. She is now 17kg at 3.5years, and he is only 2kg behind her at 8 months. Thank you for replying! X

average weight for a 3 year old girl is 15kg so 17kg is about the 95th percentile. What is her diet like?

I don’t think any point worrying until you see a professional (although i’d go to GP rather than a HV)

Thank you for your reply @withthischoice my HV appointment is Monday, so if they don’t give any next steps I’ll go to the GP. Thank you!

Oh sorry @withthischoice i forgot to answer your question. Her diet is okay, she doesn’t eat a huge amount as she’s a picky eater, but she eats plenty of fruit and cheese!

That is quite big. My child is probably a year older and probably weighs 11.

Deffo worth having a check up I think, especially behind on any millstones.

Hey, my son is 8 months and is 13kg. Wondering if your son ever slowed down in weight or what has happened since this post with his weight/ dr visits?

OneDay1234 · 12/08/2025 10:33

@Sammmmmyjay yes he did slow right down! He is now very average. He carried on measuring off the charts until he was about 16 months. And then I stopped bf’ing and he’s now a normal weight at 2yo. I was worried but it turned out it was never an issue. X
