has anyone got the IKEA extend beds (it can be made longer as the child gets older)??

Ds is only 10months so we not looking for one now but me and dp are arguing over wat to get when the time comes!! lol.
i think we should get a normal low single bed and put those side thingys on it to stop him falling out and carry on the foot at bottom method. dp reckons the extended ones are cool etc we did see anice one in ikea but i was wondering wat age does it really go up to etc and whether its best first as last to get a "normal" bed??

I have one too. Not sure I would buy it with the benefit of hindsight, would have gone straight for a single bed (ds went into one at 3 and dd inherited the Ikea one). Dd likes it well enough though.

We have an IKEA Minnen for DS. It's still on the smallest setting at the moment, though. I really got it because we need the space now, so being able to have the small bed when he's smaller is helpful. If we had the space for a normal bed I'd have got him one of those.

They are wider than your average "toddler bed" (which means you can't use toddler bed-sized fitted sheets, have to use flat sheets) so do extend to a full single bed size. I'd be inclined to buy a proper single bed mattress when it's at full extension, though, rather than rely on the extendable foam mattress.

If you do get a single bed, no need to carry on the foot at bottom method -- that's to prevent babies getting tangled and suffocating in bedclothes, which won't be an issue once your DS is old enough to be in a bed.

Dd has just moved out of hers in the last few weeks - she is almost 7. It would have lasted longer to be honest, as we have only lowered one of the extending pieces, but dd wanted a "grown-up" bed.

It was absolutely fine - wouldn't hesitate to recommend it. You can get guards (about £4 a pair) for it, but it's so low to the ground that there's no worry about falling out.

We had the Vikare, and for the price I don't think you can beat it.

I have one. Its a metal frame with guard. DD1 loves it and its very comfy-have tried it at its smallest setting guard rails work well.

I have one too, also because ds room is small and the extra room is useful. went straight to it from cot with no guards as it is so low to ground. Ds loves it and i'm sure it will last until he is old enough for an up in the air-stuff underneath kind of bed, also for reasons of room.

I have one also, like everyone says it's useful to keep that bit of extra room - and I think DS like it not being too big straight out of his cot IYSWIM? We used a deconstructed Tomy bed guard (in excatly the way they tell you not to!) but that has been taken away now (DS is 2.4) I'd definitely say get one.

thanx sooo much his room his huge so space wise is not a prob. i just didnt know if they're wat they're cracked up to be lol thankyou again tho

We have one of these vikare
which my dd loves. With a bed rail on either side at the moment. She is 2.10 now and has been in since about 19 months old.

we have the wooden one which we painted. it was bargainous. the mattress is shite though, we got the most expensive one and she is on the second. dd1 is 7 and still in the smallest setting (head and foot up).

do they have special mattress? can't get my head around how the mattress would get longer and longer. is the matress included with them or are those extra?

Think they are cute, but no good for getting into bed with dcs and having a cuddle. also I read to the children in bed which I couldn't do in a mini-bed. If they have nightmares I often climb in and cuddle themback to sleep too. So single beds here.
