Hi there
first time mum to a girl who’s nearly 11 month old.
should I be concerned she’s not crawling and also hand flapping?! Not consent but when very excited or frustrated she does it. She’s developed well in other areas, babbles, gives eye contact, sit ups confident and rolls etc, can stand with help, plays with toys, is very happy and can copy things like clapping, showing her tongue, eats and sleeps well. Everyone is saying no concern but my mind is in overdrive as everything you see on tik tok etc is oh hand flapping…. Is autism. Any advice welcome.

Honestly wouldn’t take any notice of tik tok videos. I’ve seen a few videos on social media saying various things are signs of autism etc, but it’s all just normal baby stuff. There’s so many things babies do as they’re learning about the world that is a ‘sign’ of autism. Babies flap their hands in excitement. Even some adults do that when very excited.
Also my baby is nearly 10 months old and doesn’t crawl but does walk around. Did you have a 9 month review with the health visitor? Mine wasn’t concerned about his not crawling as he is walking instead. If you’re concerned with her not crawling then you can definitely call the health visitor. But not all babies crawl. Some skip it or find other ways of moving around.

@Richie23 thank you so much, so my little one was a little later sitting up but once she got it she was fine. My health vis did a 8 month review and everything was well. She is showing signs of crawling (up one knees etc) she can shuffle backwards too. I think I am just a bit anxious I’ve been solo parenting for 6 weeks now and I’ve had too much time to think 😅 i have contacted my health vis who are happy to see her again but they didn’t sound concerned from what I told them. X

She sounds exactly where she should be. All babies develop different things at different times . My son started hand flapping at 7/8 months and I was worried but it’s a perfectly normal way for a baby to self regulate when they are upset or excited when they are your daughters age. My son is now 21 months, I don’t remember when he actually stopped but it was a long time ago - I’d imagine more than 6 months ago. He also didn’t crawl until the week before his birthday, he bum shuffled for a couple of weeks before this - and he was walking independently by 15 months. Hope this helps put your mind at rest.

Also something that helped me was that the reason they don’t diagnose autism in young children is because actually a lot of baby behaviour is similar to autism signs - it’s when they don’t develop past this that is become a sign that something else may be going on - and that is usually from 2 years up that they may start to track things - so don’t over analyse everything you see as at this stage it’s perfectly normal behaviour and enjoy your beautiful little girl (I say this as someone who spent far too much time worrying and wish I’d done this myself ❤️)

@Danii4 how did things progress with your LO? my baby is 10.5m and flaps her hands alooot through out the day. Mostly when she is excited or tired! Worrying me a bit though. Thanks
