Nephew being “racist”

Hi

i admit the subject is quite harsh however in a black and white world this is what it is and I don’t know what to do.

my nephew is in year 8 and last month he and his friend (who is black) were messing around and my nephew made an off about “because you are black” they laughed it off

his friend then thought it would be funny to tell the teacher what he said and quite rightly he got a days suspension. The boys are still friends and they both didn’t see the issue.

then today my nephew replayed a joke about black men and again has received a suspension. (Quite rightly so)

my issue here is that he doesn’t seem to see the issue or learn from his previous punishment at school and home.

i have tried talking to him and am at my wits end to get across the seriousness of this.

I’ve even tried to explain that should he have been older this could have repercussions under a hate crime.

anyone got any advice on how I can get through to him as he isn’t racist he is just a boy who think the joke were funny but not realising how they look in other contexts

at a loss Auntie
