HELP!!! 2-year old son just started escaping from his cot bed!!!!!

Hi,
We had a real nightmare with my son last night. He sleeps in a cot bed (fixed sides) and has started to climb out, even with a grobag! He will only be 2 years old next week.
I've never had a problem like this with his sister. Even when we moved her to a bed, she would not climb out of her bed.
I am scared he will injure himself (i've seen him do it, it's head first) but reluctant to surrender that it is now time for a bed (his sister moved to a bed at 3 1/2). I am also sure he will not stay in the bed................last night, he finally fell asleep at 1030 in the double bed that was also in his room.
HELP, what do i do. If i convert his cotbed into a bed, how do i ensure he stays in it? And because he roams, should i put a stairgate just outside his room?

oh god, i can't think straight, advice appreciated.

maybe a stairgate on his door would help? it sounds like there's no way he's staying in his cotbed now so maybe you will have to just bite the bullet! maybe he thought the double looked comfier?

If he is climbing out he is more likely to hurt himself, so you will probably have to convert it to a bed. I would use a gate on the door until he is used to going to sleep in a bed, as the novelty of it will probably mean you are in for a few restless nights.

Just keep putting him back to bed when he gets up.

TBH when I moved dds out of her cot, she regularly fell asleep on the floor for quite a while before she started sleeping in her bed.

I would say stairgate on his door. I have a good one that you have to actually lift up to open which is tricky for little people as they just don't have the leverage. You may be surprised about the bed. And you could try the rapid return, putting him back every time he gets out until he stops trying to.

DD1 went into a bed at 2 yrs, but I think it will be trickier to keep dd2 in one when she goes, so good luck

My dd1 climbed out of her cot at 19 months! (banging her head and splitting her lip in the process). It was so annoying, we ended up putting a matress on the floor for her to sleep on and a stairgate on the door. It took months for her to learn to stay in her bed.

My dd had to be moved into the bed version of her cotbed 6 weeks before she turned 2.

Convert the bed, put a stairgate on his door, and remain firm and consistent. He can still stay in his grobag.

Mattress on the floor of a completely childproofed room, and a stairgate on the door.

I had to move DS to a bed in December - he was 20 months. Same reason - escape artist boy and he just wasn't safe.

We have a stairgate on his door.

We put DD into her bed at 2years old and put a stairgate across her door. She amuses herself in the mornings for a bit before needing attention, and at bedtime can't escape from her room, so she doesn't even bother getting out of bed!
