Parents of babies who were late to crawl/bum shuffle/walk...

... please can you tell me when your child did eventually start moving, and anything you did to hasten the process? My very-nearly-one-year-old is showing no signs of crawling or bum shuffling, and I'm getting anxious. I would really appreciate any words of wisdom from parents who have been there!

Many thanks!

My daughter started bum shuffling just before her first birthday and didn't walk until 21 months.

My DS started bum shuffling just before his first birthday, encouraged by putting toys or especially snacks just out of reach. He did that for about 6 weeks then started crawling. He crawled for a few months which built his strength to start pulling himself up on things and from there he started walking - I think he was walking by 14 months! It all progressed very quickly over a short period of time. But every child will do things in their own way!

Hi, I just wondered if anybody had a similar experience, my baby was 3 months prem, stayed in hospital for that full 3 months 2 & oxygen going home he is now 1, has been off on& doing great for 2 months but I worry as he doesn’t want to crawl, should I be worried? He can roll over but lately doesn’t much he just stays on his back, he can sit up if put in the position

I had 2 late walkers.
The first who was 6 weeks prem, crawled just after his first birthday and walked just before 18 months.

My second (who wasn’t premature) sat at 5 months, started bum shuffling at 14 months and finally decided to start walking at 23 months.

I took the second to see a physio (as she wasn’t even standing at 18 months- she first stood at 19-20 months) who told me average age of a bottom shuffler to walk is 22 months and gave me some advice on encouraging her to stand (putting things on table/sofa so she’d want to pull up to reach them).

Now you’d never know with either of them that they were so slow to walk.

My conclusion is that they’ll get there in their own time and it really doesn’t matter when they start moving/walking. You just have to try not to compare and ignore all the “isn’t he/she walking yet”? questions from other parents/family.

@Lolly7778 you might be better starting your own thread, maybe in the Premature Birth Section Flowers

Thank you so much everyone, that is very reassuring. X

Mine crawled the week of her first birthday and walked at 19 months. I was so worried and stressed about it. Now at 21 months you can't tell she was late, and I realise how much time I wasted worrying about it🙈
