Reflux/Omeprazole

I'm hoping this is the right place to post this!

By DS is 4.5 months old and has been on omeprazole since he was almost 2 months old.

Back story, he has always been a real screamer, never settled well, always uncomfortable, he's breastfed but hasn't ever fed well, always on and off crying, back arching, red faced, knees up, never slept through the night and just a generally unhappy baby. He had his tongue tie cut twice and latched slightly better after this. I am vegan so he's never had cows milk and I've cut out soy too.

Back holiday in August DS had literally screamed all day and when he didn't take his bedtime expressed milk bottle, we knew something wasn't right, we rang 111 and then sent us up to paeds A&E where after a very long time, we were sent away with omeprazole and lactulose.

The dose wasn't quite high enough to start with, but when it was put up to 6mg, he started to become more settled, and a happier little boy. Until about 3/4 weeks ago when he started getting awful wind pain and constipated despite the lactulose. Fast forward to 2 weeks ago when we had an appointment with the consultant, she put his dose up to 10mg. Well this was the worst mistake we have ever done. DS screamed all day for two days just like he did before being on it, so we put his dose back down to 6mg again and he was still uncomfortable but not as much as he was but he then didn't poo for 15 days. So I took him to the doctor's on day 11 of no poo, she said wean off of omeprazole as he is more active now with rolling etc and holds his head really well and reflux might be better.

I was so anxious about this, but did the weaning process and he had a poo 2 days later- hooray (?) Well he seemed more uncomfortable after having the poo, possibly due to not getting it all out and he hasn't had another since (that was two days ago). We are on day 4 of no omeprazole now and I think we are going though the acid battle of coming off. He is SO congested, has an awful cough particularly after laying down and a runny nose. It affects his feeds and after his bedtime bottle, my god, the pain he is in. The acid comes up, he violently swallows to get it back down, cue coughing, runny nose etc and this has lasted about 40 minutes the last two nights.
He's now sad in the day times due to having this cough and being really congested and can't nap very well.

Has anyone else stopped omeprazole and experienced this and if so how long did it last? I have the worst mum guilt for doing this so my baby 😭
I just want my happy baby back that we had for about 3 weeks. He is struggling so much.
We have had 3 professionals talk to us about early weaning, has anyone done this?

Sounds so very hard, for both of you.

Has anyone mentioned the possibility of a dairy allergy?

Hi! Did your LO settle? If so, how long did it take? Mine is currently experiencing the same and we are weaning off omeprazole 😭

Hi :) @Raggy666

DS went through the acid battle for about 4 weeks and his reflux gradually got better with no omeprazole, but the thing that helped the most was early weaning (under paediatric advice).

He is 6.5 months now and have done it ever so slowly from 5 months. His reflux isn't gone and he still brings up sick quite a lot, but he seems to be in much less pain and so much less pain than the omeprazole was causing him.

We are gradually introducing different foods, especially ones that may trigger reflux and I am a bit scared to do this, but know we need to try them to know what he can tolerate and what he can't.

Hope your journey goes well!
