Hi all
my son is 22 months old. He has started finally saying a little from last month like below
Opa for open
iiii for in
bubb bubb for bubble
waa for bye
Baa - says when we ask what sheep says
counts and says - one two
choose for shoes

while i am a little relieved by this as he atleast started something. I am worried about his babbling. He babbles all the time and to himself.
he speaks all day in his own language and that is not directed to us.. he just says for himself
i took it up with paed and said we will have him evaluated for Asd.
any experiences?
he does point sometimes when asked what he wants.. he always look at us to make us see him and see our reactions to whatever he is doing or got new in his hands
he responds to name
can do all actions of wheel on the bus
knows what is wave, hop, flying kiss, where is head, tummy, go up - down. Go .. stop.

he can bring me his bunny ball water as he knows these things..
he is my first born and i know as much as i want him to be perfect.. i want him to be healthy. Please tell me if it bees okay in the end?

He sounds really similar to my son who is also 22 months old.
He has about 10 consistent words but mainly babble or his own language, he does direct it to us though.
Is this the only reason you are having him assessed for ASD or are there any other concerns?

ritcha · 21/11/2023 13:52

The words that he knows is directed to us.. but not all other babble he does..
yes his speech and language understanding is my concern..
else he is a calm lovely kid who loves us to core.

Yeah so my son is the same.
How's his understanding? Can he follow simple instructions?
Does he do any gestures? Does he point to request something as well as share the enjoyment with you ie a plane in the sky?

Does your son have ASD? @char2108

char2108 · 22/11/2023 07:55

@angpat I've suspected it but not diagnosed. We had a review with HV at 18 months and they weren't concerned but I still have my concerns.

Reasons I suspect-

His speech is delayed. He has about 20 words but even they aren't that clear, we are booked for a hearing test next month.

He waves him arms around a lot! He used to flap but has got less as he's gotten older.

Barely waves

Spins wheels on cars a lot

Loves opening/closing doors

Playing with light switches

Wouldn't follow 2 point instructions I don't think

Shy around new people

Positives-

He points to everything and shares enjoyment with me

He babbles/talk own language directly to me as if we are having a conversation

Follows simple instructions

Plays so lovely with other children, gets very excited by them

Great eye contact

Loves songs and does dances to them all

Mimics us often

So yeah... its a hard one, I'm just going to wait until the 2 year check and go from there, it's so hard not too stress all the time though!

From what I know about ASD the positives seem
very good and the negatives could just be noal
toddler behavior !! Does he spend a long time doing those things such as spinning wheels or putting light switches on and off of just a few minutes and then moves on to something else if you distract him?

char2108 · 23/11/2023 14:37

He does them for a few minutes and moves on quickly, he doesn't get upset or anything if I move him away but he keeps trying over and over.

Yeah I believe it's hard to diagnose under 3 for that reason, it's hard to know if it's normal toddler behaviour.
