3 year old DS behaviour change at nursery

DS (aged 3) has been attending the same nursery since he turned 1 with no issues. Since he has gone into the preschool room with a lot of new children now attending his behaviour has changed.
I noticed a few weeks ago he would come home with the occasional scratch one close to his eye. I spoke to nursery at the time who said there are quite afew boisterous boys in there and they have been getting them to be more gentle/share etc. When speaking to DS about it he said there are lots of naughty boys who are scratching him. I told him he needs to tell the teachers and stay away from them.
Anyway since then nursery have said DS behaviour has changed. That he has been fighting/not listening to instructions etc. I said what he had told me about 'naughty boys'. Nursery's response was that he chooses to play with them.
I have spoke to DS again and he seems to understand and said he will listen more and stay away from 'naughty boys.' But at the end of the day he is 3 and it's concerning me that he seems to be seen as naughty when for the last 2 years we have had no issues. They have asked me about behaviour changes/issues at home but the cause seems to be at nursery.
Any advice/similar situation? I don't want him to be influenced but also want him to be able to stick up for himself.
