Really angry 10 year old son

My 10-year-old son is really struggling with anger. He has always been highly strung, but over the last six months we’ve started to see a real increase in his sulking, outbursts and general lack of resilience. I work in the field of child, emotional well-being and so try really hard to respond in a way that is constructive, but also challenges the poor behaviour. As a mum though I just feel really lost.

He is very sporty and sport is a huge trigger for these outbursts. if he feels slighted in any way during a sporting event he loses his shit and finds it very difficult to Calm down. He is never physically aggressive towards anybody else but storms off and tends to seethe inwardly for ages.

When he is feeling calm and regulated, he is a lovely compassionate and reasonable child, he can reflect on his actions and see that they are not appropriate, but this never translates into him handling these situations differently. I really want to nip this in the bud now, certainly before he gets to secondary school. Has anyone been through this and can offer advice?

(Oh, for context, no other issues that I can think of which might be affecting him. Stable and happy family, both immediate and wider. No one else behaves like this).

Are you sure he's not got anything else going on OP. Emotional Outbursts and a heightened sense of justice can both be signs of ADHD.
