you can feel them before you see them IMHO. Just slip your finger in his mouth and slide it around his gums

um .. along the edge where teeth are - they point down or up from the edge

a tooth feels distinctly sharper than the hard gum ..

anyway he'll be chomping down on you if teething and it can hurt

The upper teeth show as a hard lump in the gum at the front side, the lower teeth as a hard lump in the gum at the back side (or at least my daughter's did)
