Hey there

My 21 month old is not waving or index finger pointing and I'm getting so worried. We are practising waving everyday when daddy goes to work and using books and games for pointing. I've rang hv when he was 20months and weren't concerned said that he may be skipping stages. I know nothing medically is wrong as he has had hearing tests b4 when he was younger.

Talking is a issue really worried. No words at all. Will make a noise if a song finishes or wants something. He understands commands and walks to places if he wants something like to the fridge if he wants juice or gets bittle our of cupboard.
Wot shud I do.???? Do I ring hv again???

I'm so sorry that you've been fobbed off when you are so clearly worried.

I'd start by doing this 18 month SLT progress checker. If it says "you have answered no to some important questions" I'd give their helpline a call.

Then I would call the HV and ask her to do the 20 month Ages & Stages. You can fill it on before you see them.

It's normal for them to score in the grey for a couple of areas but if it's more than that I'd ask (read that as insist) that he's referred for SLT and to a Paediatrician for Assessment.

I hope your HV is more supportive this time Flowers

@Candymanmummy Hello, some update about your kid?

Candymanmummy · 10/07/2024 07:55

He's 2.6 years now and still doesn't point if he wants something just goes and gets it himself. Hv not worried nor is speech therapy from a video call. Hes starting speech therapy next week but his language is really starting to come thru now he can say bout 100 to 150 words so I stressed for no reason.

@Candymanmummy And how about understanding at 21m? if he follow only simple one word command? or like some complicated?

Candymanmummy · 10/07/2024 08:06

He didn't start understanding commands or the more complicated ones till he was bout 1.5 years or nearer 2. When he turned 2 it all just came together

Hi Candymanmummy, Was just looking for some advice. My son has just turned 17 months old and he wasn't pointing to anything until this last weekend when I've been able to get him to point to some images in books when asked . He doesn't point to anything he wants just goes and gets it like you mentioned with your son. Nor does he wave hi or bye-bye. He also doesn't speak but does babble. When we asked the hv about the lack of pointing at 15 months she also said it was because he can just get things himself and nothing to be concerned about. Me and my partner are slightly concerned about autism. Just wondering how things worked out for you and what information did your health visitor give. Thank you

Candymanmummy · 10/07/2024 13:51

I thought exactly the same with autism as I read it on Google. My hv said that he will do it in his own time. I spoke to other parents who said he will do it in his own time ( I hate that saying) all I did was keep trying talking and I found watching YouTube helped with speaking and using a tablet with games on for pointing. Mine still doesn't really point but I'm not bothered now.
Unfortunately my hv wasn't very helpful.

Yeah we have contacted our health visitor but she is on holiday this week so need to wait until next week. We have a speech and language meeting for the start of August so hoping we can get him going before then if not hopefully it helps. Can you remember if your little one would copy you for example: doing head shoulders knees and toes or other nursery rhymes as my little one doesn't. But he has learned to put the keys in the door and where the spoons are

Also sorry but from what you've said your son considered for autism. I don't mean to pry to much

Candymanmummy · 10/07/2024 15:27

Yes mine started doing nursery rhymes at 2 and started doing the actions only a few weeks ago. Ur little .one sounds like mine I just had to keep trying with the speaking. I'm used posters as well from local pound shop to help with body parts and songs
YouTube is my best friend with everything from mother goose club to dream kids for pointing 👉 singing and copying. He also is getting alot from his playgroup.

I convinced myself he had autism from all the reading I was doing in google. If they don't do this, it's autism etc I now know he hasn't got it he's just a late developer.

Yeah I think me and m partner have done the same with reading on Google just hoping it's similar to you. Is/was your little one good with eye contact. Mine does make it but now I'm not sure if me and my partner are looking into it to much. Sometimes just feel like he should make more when we change his bum for example

Candymanmummy · 10/07/2024 17:32

Omg mine never made eye contact when changing bum he was everywhere but he changed and started doing it. All I can say to u is stop reading google. I got to a point where I was crying and stressing for no reason.

Yeah I've been close to tears with the worry after reading a few thing's. With being the first you don't know what to expect. Thank you for all your replies..

Candymanmummy · 10/07/2024 19:31

Trust me I have anxiety and this is my only child it's heartbreaking when u read something and he's not doing it or when they have their review and are not doing what it states

Yeah my little one was walking before 1. So I assumed the speech would come along a little faster than it has so far. He is really tall for his age ( in 2-3 clothes) so he can reach a lot himself and what he can't he tries to climb.
