13 Month Old Social Development Concerns

Sorry for the long post in advance.
I am worried about my 13 month old DS's social development.
He does not always respond to his name and only makes eye contact when he wants to or when he's not distracted. He never smiles back at people he doesn't know. He doesn't play with babies his age but is comfortable around older kids. He also shakes his head and likes to play with wheels but not exclusively. He is okay in other areas like-

  • he can crawl and cruise
  • he can stand with support for extended periods
  • he can clap, high-five and has just started waving occasionally
  • he tries to copy 1-2 words and actions when we play with him
  • he babbles and can say mama and dada
  • he is very curious in general and seeks new things and toys to explore

I am work from home so haven't put him in nursery or taken to baby classes so our social interactions have been limited.

There is no autism in my and DH's families but we are both a bit socially awkward. I also have a history of anxiety.

I just want to know if any of your kids were like this and if they turned out neurotypical. If they were diagnosed with autism was it severe or mild.

Thanks for your replies.

I haven’t got any advice I’m afraid but my DS ( also 13 months ) has some of the same traits you’ve described.

he doesn’t like my sisters 13 month old always hits him doesn’t like him at all but he does like her 2 year old.

really liked to spin wheels but that has calmed down a bit now he’s more interested in stacking things at the moment!

and just the last week or so he keeps rocking back on his bum and slamming his feet on the floor :/

and he doesn’t point yet either ..

but other than that he seems to be doing well with eye contact responding to his name and mimicking me with facial expressions waving and clapping so I’m really unsure

How does he do on this progress checker and this one?

Thanks for sharing these! He is above the cutoff in all but just about in the personal-social areas.
That's what worries me, his engagement with other people is quite restricted. It's only become more noticeable since he turned 1 but he's also teething and has 3-4 teeth cutting through together, so I am not sure if it's coz he's in discomfort and pain.

Hoping it's just a phase Confused

Glad your little one is on track with the rest of their development. Smile

Hopefully things will get better in the coming months in the areas of concern as well. Good luck!
