Feeling so sad about grumpy 6 week old

He's just grumpy. He wakes up & instantly screams. He drinks lots. He's happy after a feed & will sort of cat nap but he defo doesn't sleep anywhere near enough in the day. He started smiling a couple of weeks ago but the last few days I haven't managed to get one smile out of him. He has mild reflux. We have changed his milk from Cow & Gate to Hipp Organic 2 days ago but we have been told to give it a couple of weeks to see if it changes anything. Saw a Paediatrician yesterday who said CMPA unlikely as apart from fussiness he has no symptoms of it. He can be quite windy but doesn't seem to cause discomfort. It's just relentless. When he's awake he can't just chill. Has to be held, I just feel my day is filled with trying to stop him crying & I feel sad & bad I can't seem to fix this. I've booked him in with a Cranial Osteo but have heard mixed reviews. My first DC was nothing like this, chilled as anything. He doesn't like a sling, will tolerate a pram. He just seems so unhappy & never has much enjoyment in anything. Any advice/experience welcome.

Hey, I would go to the doctor and get your baby some Omeprazole for the reflux asap. The reflux is acid in his throat and is hurting him, which makes him grumpy.

we had this with our son, he had colic the first 3 months and it made us so sad, he cried so much and was so unsettled. As soon as the omeprazole started to work (it takes a few weeks) he was like a different baby.

we tried changing formula, gaviscon etc but nothing worked until the omeprazole, we were able to stop using it once he hit 5 months and was ready for solids.

if we had another baby with this problem we would definitely demand omeprazole straight away.

hope this helps!

Hi @Cafeaulait27 we did try that but he just spat it out. I don't feel his reflux is that bad to be causing him to be in pain, if he is sleepy & chilled he's ok but when he's awake he's just not a happy baby. Very hard to amuse & cannot just chill on his play mat for example, just cries. I do feel he is overtired a lot which could be the cause. It's so hard!

@bombardedskunk our boy was the same until he got to 3 months. Colic is the worst! People who haven’t experienced it don’t understand.

did you get the liquid from the GP of omeprazole? My MIL tried it and said it was sweet, our boy used to love it 😬

We didn’t think he had reflux as he wasn’t sicky but it was silent reflux so he was swallowing it back down but it was hurting. We did the omeprazole thinking it wouldn’t work but within a few weeks it did, just like magic. He was 11 weeks.

good luck and hang in there x
