What age did your dc learn to sit?

Ds2 can lie on his front, roll over, and squirm round in circles (but not deliberately iyswim). But he can't sit at all. Even if I prop him he just slides down. He is happy enough when strapped into his high chair but shows no interest in sitting. Not really worried, as he bears weight on his legs fine etc, but just interested to know if he is being unusually slow to sit.

DS was 7.5 months, DD was 6.5 months. How old is your DS2?

TrinityRhino · 01/03/2008 14:17

all mine were sitting well, unaided by 7 months

BUT all babies are different
How old is he?

Miaou · 01/03/2008 14:18

7 months.

DS rolled at about 4.5 months and wasn't interested in sitting for a while (then didn't sit for long before starting to crawl at 8.5 months).

TrinityRhino · 01/03/2008 14:20

I find it very quick
like one week they seem to just slide down and cannot do it and then a week or two later suddenly they are

nothing to worry about at all I reckon

dejags · 01/03/2008 14:22

Depends on whether you mean, sit up from lieing down, or if you mean sit up confidently having been placed in the sitting position.

DS1&2 could sit confidently from 5 months - if I put them in the sitting position. I could leave them to play and they wouldn't fall over.

DS1 could pull himself into the sitting position from lieing down from about 7 months - DS2 about 8 months.

DD is a different kettle of fish, she only started sitting confidently at 7 months (i.e when I put her in the sitting position - even now she does still fall over (she's 10 months tomorrow). Like your DS2 she rolls around can leopard crawl quite efficiently and can weight bear very well, so I am not too worried.

She'll be a late walker - thank the lord!

Miaou · 01/03/2008 16:25

He can't do either dejags - if I sit him, even propped up, he will just slide down

I don't remember what age the others sat at, but I am sure they were all sitting confidently by this age.

I'm sure it will just "click" soon but just late!

How old is he Miaou?

popsycal · 01/03/2008 19:38

both sometimes between the 6 and 7 month mark

Hulababy · 01/03/2008 19:38

DD was 17 weeks when she started sitting up for any length of time unaided, so quite early.

But a few fried's babies have ben much older than this before they sat - some close to 7 or 8 months.

dd could roll fefore she could sit. I never had that fab time when your could prop them up and let them play, she was off!

TheAccidentalParent · 01/03/2008 19:45

5.5 months.

Fiona1977 · 01/03/2008 19:52

both mine didn't so it completely unaided till 8 months. They were way too busy crawling to want to sit still.

Miaou · 01/03/2008 21:01

see, ds isn't crawling either. He just lies there and spins round occasionally!

Am now wondering if he is unusually late or this survey is unusually unscientific

TotalChaos · 01/03/2008 21:02

Eulalia · 01/03/2008 21:04

DS1 - 5 months
DS2 - 5 1/2 months
DS3 - just about there now at 9 months (though not great by any standards)

4 months, but she wasn't rolling much (if at all) at that point - I think some are just rollers and others sitters.

Miaou · 01/03/2008 21:16

oh you are so right herecomesthescience - I know, I know I am worrying over nothing. I am just having a wobble today, I really shouldn't dwell on these things

All could sit (but only surrounded by cushions because they'd easily fall over) at 5.5 months.

As for sitting reliably:

dd1 - 8 months
dd2 - 7 months
dd3 - 6 months

There are plenty of babies at babygroup (dd3's age, so around 7 months) that are nowhere near sitting yet

ArrietyClock · 01/03/2008 21:19

Mine was like TC's. Not sure she could be bothered to be frank. Still often lies down from choice. (Current game is to fall backwards and hope I catch her! Apparently it's a hoot). Still can't get herself into a sitting position without help either. Oh and no, not crawling, not walking, no idea what legs are for in fact.... I believe it's all perfectly normal in a slightly slower than average way.

Bubbaloo · 01/03/2008 22:45

Ds2 is 10 months old and has just started to sit properly, although I still stick cushions behind him as sometimes he'll still throw himself backwards.
Yesterday at toddler group he sat there with his coat behind him, just in case.
