I have posted a couple of times about my DS since he has been born, with particular concerns about his social development.

I’ll start by saying he can smile, he can make eye contact and he can track but I still have concerns.

smiling, eye contact and tracking are only on few occasions. My DH therefore thinks he is fine but I still have concerns.

today my MIL and FIL came to pick up my DD. They obviously wanted to see and interact with their grandson too. I was holding him after a feed and despite what anyone did to get his attention, he just looked down at his feet. Can I please ask whether your babies would react if someone was close by, smiling and talking to them? It’s almost as though he has no inkling whatsoever that people are there.

this isn’t a one off either. If anyone talks to him, or tries to get any kind of reciprocal attention he just appears as though no one is there at all. If our eyes accidentally meet then he will engage and smile for a couple of seconds but I’m sure we should be getting more from him by now.

shiuld I raise my concerns with the HV?

I would, especially if you're that concerned that you've posted twice already.

Give them a call and ask her to do the 4 month Ages & Stagess*. It can be done from 12 weeks.

I'd also ask her to refer for eyesight and hearing tests, just to rule those out Flowers

Hi OP sorry you've been stressed about this, the early days are quite worrying aren't they . If he can interact when he makes eye contact and smile etc that's great. Maybe he has poor eye sight / focus? My daughter has a rare eye condition that causes a squint - do you ever catch him squinting?

Thanks for your replies, I have left a message with the HV. I’m sure that his eyesight and hearing are fine it’s just as though he is choosing not to engage. I don’t know if because he does it occasionally that it’s fine and it doesn’t matter that for the most time I can’t get his attention. He potentially has reflux and not sure whether that takes his attention away when he’s in pain? He doesn’t scream in pain with it but when in his chair or on his back he does a weird squirm (almost like a sit up) and having googled (I know, very silly) I think it might be Sandifer syndrome but really not sure

If he's screaming in pain, does it sound like he might have this?

Hi, how is your LO now? Sounds similar to my LB and I’m waiting for peads appointment based on GP referral. Thanks.

@Doyle199 hi, he’s doing great! Not sure what it was but since turning about 5 months he’s been doing so much better. He turns 8 months next week and is such a smiley, happy boy. He cracked crawling last week, started clapping a few weeks ago, puts his arms up to be picked up if you reach out to him etc. He loves people (especially his sister) and loves to interact. I was very worried (but did have PPA and PPD) but he’s just blossomed in his own time and we’re very proud of him.
What kind of things are you worried about with your little one? Xx

That’s so lovely to hear!!

He’s really inconsistent at giving eye contact and doesn’t hold it for very long when he does. He also rarely tracks me items or turns his head to look at things.

i dont think there’s a vision or hearing problem because he does respond to noises and is batting items.

I’m hoping he just comes on in his own time but the docs and the milestones get you worried! He’s 11 weeks now but 9 weeks adjusted.

Thanks for getting back to me!
