How can a 5 week old NOT SLEEP

Literally I do not know how my 5 week old functions. He has days where he does not sleep in the day. I kid you not today since 9am he's had 45 mins sleep. I've tried a sling, pram, the car, his cot. He dozed for 5/10 minutes then PING his eyes open & that's that. He eats like a horse & generally at night isn't too bad but how the hell can a brand new baby function with no sleep?! Is this ok?! Surely he needs the sleep?!

Yep, this was pretty much my DC from the start, except they also seemed morally opposed to sleeping at night too...

Once we hit toddler stage, things improved a bit with sleep (running everywhere is tiring). DH and I basically lived in shifts for the first while though.

hello, just to say I had this question when my little one was young. He would be awake for 8 hours straight, most of that time feeding. I just couldn’t understand how he was not sleeping, I think he would some times be asleep but just suckling but other times just feeding. He’s now 9 months and has gone from 3 naps to
2 naps but they are pretty Much routine.
i think it’s just babies getting all the food in now and then when they are a bit older they settle down! I used to Google it all the time and see so many things about how much newborns sleep
and mine just didn’t!! Hopefully things will get better for you soon xx

@liz3333 Thank you, I'm the same, googling about sleep & seeing lots of posts saying how newborns sleep so much of the day.. not here! I genuinely can't understand how he stays awake. It's like he doesn't want to miss anything. He will sleep in the pram but sometimes only for about half an hour before waking up crying for food/just because he can Grin. He's an angry little thing when he's hungry too, he's just so polar opposite to my first. You can put him down for short periods of time but really he's only happy if he's eating or being held.. I had visions of the first couple of months of me watching Netflix but no such chance, he's a very high needs baby with not a lot of chill!
