Not pointing?

Concerned about my 21 month old DS. He doesn't point or wave (think he's waved about 4 times in total). He will say bye.

He will point at books, he'll point at things in books and tell me what they are but he never points to things outside. The only thing I have seen him point at other than books are his curtains, they've got animals on them and he will point at them for me to tell him what they are.

He is talking in single words, when I collect him after work and we go home he says 'home' or 'dad' as he knows his daddy is there when we get home and if he's asked who is it he can say dad, mama, granny.

He has also recently started calling his auntie by name. He can recognise and say the alphabet & count to 20 and back. He plays with his toys, but will rarely bring one to me to show me but he does check to see if I'm watching him and will clap his hands when he does something like complete a puzzle. He loves colouring and painting, eats and sleeps great but I can't help but worry.

I have noticed him squinting and bad eyesight runs in my side of the family so I'm not sure if this is possibly why? Or if it's just late development or something else?

If he's squinting and you have poor eyesight in the family I think the first thing is to get his eyes checked although you might have to ring a few Opticians before you get one who'll do a DC so young.

Just to add that you could ask your HV to do the 20 month Ages & Stages and refer him for an eyesight check at the Hospital.

I'd agree with an eyesight check and the Ages & Stages questionnaire.

How would he tell you he wanted something he couldn't reach? A toy on the shelf, his cup on the work surface, fruit from the fruit bowl? If he saw something exciting out and about (a bus, a big dog, whatever he's interested in), would he do anything to try to draw your attention to it as well?
