Hi everyone,

I'm looking to hear some stories where it was thoughts your child had Autism and then found not to be.

What were the first initial signs it could be and how did these change or develop?

Thanks Flowers

yes - first signs were not pointing/clapping/waving, no words at all at age 2 and loss of attempted letter sounds at 1. The paediatric Dr at our local hospital said classic autism, our GP thought autism, a Dr specialising in autism thought autism and a friend who teaches in an autistic school thought autism as did a couple of speech and language therapists.

We then started with a speech therapist who thought not autism and at 3.5 he had the ADOS and multi disciplinary assessments at our local hospital and it was found to be not autism but speech and language delay. Gradually and with a lot of speech therapy he gained the pre-verbal language skills and eventually speech, very unclear at first and by 4.5-5 his speech was fine.

We had very similar experience to the previous poster and your post. He's now 7 and still has speech and language issues but is much improved.

We had the opposite sorry. We knows something was wrong but couldn't get anyone to listen for years.
