How do I stop him biting me/other people?!

DS 13 months, will not stop biting me (hands, face, neck!) and anyone else he can get his teeth into! It's really quite hard, he's drawn blood several times. Have tried saying "no" very firmly, he either laughs or cries (depending how firmly I say it!) but either way just carries on. Have tried saying "it hurts mummy" and pretending to cry to try and show him it makes other people "upset", but think he's just too young to understand that message! Give him calpol and bongela if I think he seems particularly bad with teething, and have tried teething rings etc (which he's just not interested in) but he is always biting, it can't always be teething! Worried in particular he will really hurt one of the other LOs in our toddler group! What should I do?

JMB, this is a stage they all seem to go through.

On one level, for the child, it works, because he bites, you react, loads of attention, bingo.

This is the hard bit. If he bites you, put him down if you are holding him, walk away if he's bit on the fly-past as it were,. No need to say anything, withdraw eye contact. Just for 30 seconds or a minute, only.

Basically, you are discouraging the biting in a gentle way.

Of course lots of attention when he's not biting.

Bless him
