10 month baby not crawling

DD is nearly 10 months and not crawling. Saw the health visitor last week who seemed concerned. Baby does bum shuffle and tries to pull up to stand, but seems to have minimal strength in her arms. If we assist, she can stand fairly strongly holding our fingers. But her legs go out to a frog position whilst lying on her tummy and she screams. Hv suggested she doesn’t get enough tummy time. in a sense she is right as this is DC2 and baby spends loads of time strapped into the pram whilst DC1 is being carted around.

DD sits quite strongly (can only get to sitting from lying with assistance) and rolls both ways easily. She had loads of tummy time when she was tiny but admittedly much less over the last months as she’s become a strong sitter.

I’ve been reading out bum shuffling’s links to other delays and went into a bit of a tailspin. Any suggestions for helping baby learn? Should I push for physio? Something else?

I'm surprised they were concerned.
When we had our review my DS wasn't crawling, pulling up or even standing when we held him up, and she wasn't worried at all.
He's 13 months now and crawling and starting to pull up.

I spent so much time worrying, and really, they all do it in their own time.

Can I just ask what prompted you to see the HV? Is it that you've read about bum shuffling and got worried?

@SiouxsieSiouxStiletto I’d just popped in for a weight check

Ok so if you just went in for a weight check and the HV is concerned, obviously give her the tummy time that the HV is recommending, if you can, but I'd also contact her again and ask her to do the 10 month Ages & Stages.

Depending on how she scores, I'd push for the physio you mentioned, especially given the lack of upper body strength and maybe Portage.

Let us know how you get on Flowers

I'd agree with prioritising some more tummy time. You could also encourage upper body strength with toys for her to reach for when sitting, maracas or slightly heavier rattles to shake, helping pull her to standing from sitting (making a game of it but gradually letting her do more of the pulling), and things like that. Bouncing her on your knee holding her hands so she uses her arms and core strength for balance.

Also think if you've got anything that's particularly easy for her to grab and pull up on. DD1 first pulled up and cruised in her cot, for example, because she could get a good grip, so I gave her time in her cot to practice when she was awake and happy. (I stayed with her, she'd not have been happy otherwise, but that depends on the baby.)

Is it normal for a 9 month old baby still can’t pull himself up to sitting position or standing position yet ?

SiouxsieSiouxStiletto · 22/08/2023 06:40

@Oscar1155 is it your LO?

Can they stand against the sofa or cot? Are they crawling?
