I have a lovely 2 year old who has suddenly started throwing awful tantrums that I’m finding hard to deal with. It’s multiple times a day over the slightest inconvenience and often in public. The main issue is him hitting, kicking and scratching us.
At home we manage them by putting him in a safe but isolated part of our living room, telling him we understand why he’s upset but it’s not ok to hit and then move away for a minute and once we’re back he’s often calmed down.
however I have no idea what to do when these tantrums happen in public. They are almost always because
a. He refuses to walk or go in the buggy and only wants to be carried. This is totally unsustainable as he’s heavy and I can’t carry him far
b. He wants a constant supply of snacks.
in this scenario it’s impossible to move away from him as it’s not safe near roads etc but if I try to calm him down by holding his arms in a cuddle it makes thing 100% worse and he kicks, headbuts etc. que lots of staring…
i’m at a loss as to how to manage in public other than never leave the house…
Google suggests anticipating the tantrums and avoiding the triggers but I can’t head these things off at the pass as carrying him all the time or giving constant snacks is not an option.
anyone got any suggestions?
