My baby is 18 months and only says ‘dada’?

Is it normal or not?

My first born was talking quite early and did brilliantly with her speech.

My boy however is 18 months now and can only say ‘dada’ he’s been able to say dada for several months but absolutely nothing else. He babbles and makes noises, and he points to things often so communication is ok, but the lack of talking is starting to throw me off.

I thought I read it was normal for kids not to start talking until 18 months but now when I’ve looked it says they should have up to 20 words and start saying words more clearly and melodic.

We read a lot and give lots of opportunities to repeat words we say. I just don’t know when I should worry?

I think you're right about the 20 words thing. I'd do this progress checker for speech and language and if it says "you answered no to some important questions, give their helpline a call Wink
