5 year old hair twirling

Hi,

So my daughter seems to have picked up a hair twirling habit. Initially she was pulling her hair out when she first started school and she literally had a bald patch at e front of her head. It was so painful to see this happening, this was down to transitioning to school from nursery and finding out she was going to be a big sister.

We managed to help her curb this by using thick hair bands to keep her hair out of her face.

However we now have a hair twirling resurgence, so I now send he into school with a sensory necklace so she can twirl that or chew it and seems to be helping.

Shes now twirling her hair in her sleep, well not full on sleep but that state in between awake and asleep… has anyone had any luck or tips to help their kids while they sleep? As my daughter has fine hair and it knots so easily that most of the time I can’t undo the knot and save her hair.

I have found myself waking up at like 5 just to keep an eye on her to help stop any twirling so she doesn’t damage her hair.

Any help/suggestions are most welcome.

Thanks.

It sounds as though she's not coping very well at school. Have you spoken to the teacher to see if they have any concerns?

As for the hair twirling the only thing I can think of is to plait her hair before bed Flowers

@SiouxsieSiouxStiletto
yes the school have been great with helping her redirect her twirling and thankfully my daughter tells me when things are bugging her and we try and talk to her to reassure her.

I do plait her hair at bed the problem I have is that the short front bits don’t stay and that’s what she twirls in her sleep. I do put hair clips in but she does toss and turn a bit in her sleep.
