Hi.
i am very worried for my DS. He is going to be 18month old this month and has no words.
he could say papapapapapa on repeat when we do so. He makes various sounds like ishh, coco, ka koo, ich , achh…
he responds to his name very well. Is a great runner and loves to climb things.
he claps, he waves by bye, he understands when we are leaving and loves going outside
in a park, he is watches he surroundings carefully but prefers doing all the mischievous things alone.
he does not point, he knows the use of his index finger because it is out many times .. just never uses it to point.
he will be take my hand if needs something. He loves clapping and makes other clap too.
he is smiling kid.. no autism is in our family as of now.. but i am worried about his speech and his understanding..
he gets me something when he wants but most of the times he would ignore me.. so does not follow commands too.
on other side he loves me and my husband alot. He wants us to play with him all the time and does not trouble in adjusting to new location or people.. he has excellent eye contact. If he is doing something or running, he will look back to make sure that we are looking at him and that is how he shares his interest and activity. A clap from us is what he looks for or even us running behind him to grab something he should not have(and he knows that. He makes sure that he makes us notice it and then make us run)
this pointing thing and not following commands is making more crazy than the fact he has no words..
i am first time mom and getting crazy

Hello!yoi wrote he brings you something when he wants , does it mean when you ask him to give you somthing or just to share?
Beacuse my son who is 18 months will bring me something on request only if he wants and in general follows command only on his terms. I also somwtimes worry he might not understand but i seems that when he is in the mood he is not bad ad following commands. I feel at this age it can also be a bit a focusing/mood issue and that it is not so easy to evaluate what they really understand.
Does he understand single words? Does he looks in the right direction if you ask him where is for example the ball or mum?
Does he knows some body parts?

Anyway there is not only ASD bit also language delays can occur alone

Than maybe it would be good to check with your HV..anyway sharing, good name reponse and eye contact are very postive ..does he do any pretend play? It really might just be language and communication delay. Also if he is a bit delayed in these areas also pointing and gesturing can be a bit delayed as a consequence.
He is still very young.

@ritcha i think this is totally normal to be honest. Our 18m daughter can say yes and no but they don’t really mean anything to her. She’ll shake her head and say yes. She also makes up loads of words in baby speak and talks her own language over and over in the same way. I think it’s normal development at this age. Not all are walking and talking at the same time. Just make the most of each day. Sure they’ll both leap in no time.

All the best.

22 months with few words,
he points now. Follow few commands
he is behind his peers but i have some progress
still its killing me .. i have his few words but then every month feels like time is slipping by..
i have children around speaking in two words but he has just started. I am being patient but we are looking to get him evaluated or put him in therapy at 24 months

@ritcha I'm just wondering if he's had a hearing test? If not, I'd ask your HV to refer him.

This article from the charity Speech & Language UKK* says what he should be doing and when to worry.
