Baby not playing with toys

Baby is 11 months old and doesn't play with toys, he just throws them around. Throws, then crawls after them, throws again etc. I wouldn't be concerned but he doesn't seem to know how to put something down - he has never released a toy with control or put something down on the floor, table, in a box, into my hand etc. Everything just goes flying. Should I be worried? Is there anything I can do to encourage him and help learn how to put toys down?

How is he with his milestones @angrsaurus?

Are you due to see the HV for his 12 month check soon?

@SiouxsieSiouxStiletto yes I think we will have a 12 month review, but it hasn't been booked in yet. He only turned 11 months last week.

I've looked at the questionnaire and he does almost everything from gross and fine motor skills, some personal-social and problem solving but barely any from communication. Now I'm really worried ☹️

It's ok if he's not doing everything in the assessment. It's not designed for them to score perfectly in each section.

If the communication bit is in the fret there are a couple of things you can do. I'd get onto the HV on Monday and ask her to book him in for the 13 month check.

I'd do this SLT progress checker. If it says "you've answered no to some important questions" you can call their helpline.

If he's still scoring low in communication when you send the HV, don't let her adopt the wait and see approach. We did this with ours and didn't get the support we needed for years. Insist instead that he's referred for a hearing test and for SLT. At least now you're you've done the assessment and you know what to expect when you see the HV Flowers

@SiouxsieSiouxStiletto thank you so much, I will call the helpline as we did get the "you answered no to some important questions" result. Unfortunately HV said I have to wait until the letter comes through for the 12 month check, which will probably be closer to 13 months as they have a backlog. I will get onto the SLT helpline asap.
