11 month old coughing when drinking water

Hi,

My DS seems to be unable to drink water without choking/coughing. We’ve tried all manner of cups (miracle cup, open cup, cup with straw, etc). Does not make a difference, he will inevitably take in large gulps and then cough it out. He is BF and is weaning well. No issues with solid food. Just water. Has anyone encountered this and is there something to be done about it? Or do I wait for him to grow out of it? Thank you!

@Liv876 My little one does the exact same thing with water? How is your DS getting on now? Is it something he’s grown out of? X

My DS is now 17 months old and can drink water without issues. So it seems that this is something that they grow out of. That being said, it took some effort on our part. At some point when he was about 12 months old, I bought him yet another cup with a straw (the kind with a sort of stopper). And he really took to it. He coughed a bit the first week, but some sort of switch was flipped and he got it. So I would say, give your little one time and offer water in various cups. Good luck!
