When do children understand about Christmas and how can I explain to a 2 year old?

DD (2y 8m) has some books about Christmas which we read around this time.

She has Twas the Night before Christmas for the Father Christmas story, and she loves the whole idea of that. She has seen FC, helps choose presents to wrap up to send to FC, has played on the north pole website, and is planning to go and see FC this weekend.

She loves the idea of Christmas trees and lights, and decorations. We are getting our tree this weekend, a bit earlier than normal, because of this.

And we also have a book about the nativity. It is a nice card book with the very simple version of the story. It also has cut out pieces for Mary, Joseph, Baby Jesus Shepherd, sheep and donkey. And they then have to fit into places onto each page. So very interactive. We also have a little nativity scene (bought cheap from one of those Christmas shops) and, because it was so cheap, DD plays with that ana dwe talk aout the nativity story with it.

Oh and we have an advent calender and candle too for the count down :)

And nursery have being doing lots of Christmas related activities - carols and songs, christmas art, etc.

DD is very excited this year about the whole thing :)
