We have some concerns about our 24 month old.
He has no words, babbles once or twice a week at most. Doesn’t wave, point or clap. Hearing seems fine. Doesn’t respond to name, even if it’s said loudly. No eye contact.
He doesn’t bring me things to look at, he only brings me things he wants my help with. Uses my hand as a tool & grabs us by the clothes to lead us to what he wants e.g a snack. Which is a guessing game.
Hand flaps when excited. Does what we call his ‘rounds’, he will walk or climb around where I’m sitting again and again. So he does a loop around me, can do this for 20 minutes.
Sleep is horrendous - a good night is waking 4 times. Struggles to self settle.
Struggles with changes or transitions from one thing to another. We recently went away & for the most part he refused to eat anything. He wasn’t sick or anything. Now back home he’s back in his routine and eats.
Has specific likes in play e.g things that spin. Doesn’t have varied interests in toys. Loves toy cars and books. Doesn’t do pretend play. Lines up things but not everything , will take the peas out of dinner and line them up or chopped up
pieces or banana.
squishes himself into small corners.
Lies down in the toy shop and touches the large letters on the floor.
All that said he is a wonderfully happy chap & a real joy. Should I wait for his 2 year health visitor check to bring up any concerns and see how he comes on?

I'd definitely be contacting your health visitor to schedule his 2 year check asap, explain your concerns etc. He's still very young but as you know there's a good few red flags so it's sensible to get your health visitor involved.

Momma u better consult DP asap ...there are some red flags...but don't panic and stress urself....lots of love to u ...

Did you manage to get hold of your HV @Soph301?

I'd ask her for a hearing test and also ask her to do the ASQ Test for 24 months.

Don't be robbed off if there are any concerns by the HV. Mist seem to say "wait and see". If he has no speech and is hardly babbling at 2 he needs referring Flowers

Hi, I’m in your position, my DS is the same age and I contacted his HV a while ago - he had his 2 year check last week. I have a lot of the same concerns as you and some different - his eye contact is good, and he’s quite engaging with people he knows and does a bit of pointing (also not clapping or waving) but not really able to show or tell me what he wants. Speech is coming along, but the main worries are extreme meltdowns to the point where I physically can’t manage him and he doesn’t want to be around other children or people he doesn’t know.

anyway, he had the review and scored above the threshold for the social emotional questionnaire due to the above. It’s quite worrying but I’m glad we’re ‘in the system’ now - the HV said it could just be a case of really challenging behaviour and being a toddler but sometimes I do think there could be more going on. We are adopting a ‘watch and wait’ approach now as he’s still very little and had the review a bit early, while I attempt to put in place some of the strategies that were recommended.

I feel you - it’s stressful and I feel like family and friends think I’m overreacting. Here if you ever want to chat!

And agree with others - from what you say at the very least they should refer him for speech and language.

I have started a speech and communication support thread over on SN children that might be useful for some contributors to this thread.
