Big Baby = Later Developer ?

My dd is just 9 months old. She was born big and has always been on the top centile for height and weight.

I'm not worried about her developmentally (had the hv check etc. and know that all babies develop at different rates etc) but she is doing less than a lot of babies her age.

She doesn't crawl (and is not really showing many signs of it). She will sit for a few seconds but will then fall over. She's nowhere near pulling herself up or even standing when supported.

She's fine with other things (babbling, waving etc.) so I do sometimes wonder if her size makes a difference. I suppose there's a fair bit of weight to support on two little feet

Has anyone else found similar ?

Ds large (10.5 at a week early) - he wasn't very mobile at 9mo on his own - he could stand up with support, and had been good at sitting up since 5mo, but didn't really start to get properly mobile until later - very late crawler and didn't really do too much as started walking at 14.5 mo when he could actually run around on day 2 of walking on his own. But, yes, others much earlier to start walking and crawling - don't know whether this helps.

DS1 9lb 4 and DS2 9lb 6. Both walked before a year old.

Ds2 has been in this life before! Certainly not a late developer more like 8yrs going on 28yrs!

Thanks both... There's always a possibility that she's just inherited my lazy gene !

DS was 10lb 5.3oz at birth and was pretty early on all his gross motor skills milestones (probably a bit behind average on his fine motor skills and language).

He had dropped down the centiles a bit, though, so was probably only at about 90th centile by the point he was crawling and walking.

meemar · 08/02/2008 15:21

Hi, as far as I know, weight at birth has no bearing on when they reach these milestones.

My DS1 was born at 6lb - he didn't sit unaided until nearly 8 months and then walked at 10 months!

DS2 was nearly 9lb and also walked at 10 months.

Your DD sounds fine, don't worry

geekgirl · 08/02/2008 15:21

TBH I don't think size has much to do with gross motor development, I reckon it's neurological development and it doesn't all happen at the same time for every child.

Two of mine were v. big babies (one 9.5 lb, one was 10lb) and they were very early crawlers (5 months).

It all doesn't matter one jot in the grand scheme of things. My eldest is now 8 and not terribly sporty at all, despite being early to hit those gross motor milestones as a baby.

Habbibu · 08/02/2008 15:21

I don't think they're related particularly. She's probably not in a hurry - you're a long time standing up and being busy - wise to grab extra lounging time while you can! DD also big - sat up before 6 months, can't remember when she crawled, walked properly at 13.5 months.

Weegle · 09/02/2008 11:22

I don't think they're related - she's probably just chilled and easy-going - thank your lucky stars!

DS was a whopper at 12lb 12oz - he sat unaided at 21 weeks which I think was quite early, he crawled at just over 9 months, and walked at 13 months exactly (so pretty average). He's average in motor skills and he's average in speech. I also was a big baby 10lb 8oz and walked at 12 months, DH was 7lb and walked at 18 months, so again doesn't seem to follow.

TillyScoutsmum · 09/02/2008 11:27

She does seem pretty chilled generally so I suspect that might just be it... Let's hope it lasts

my ds was 8lb and didn't crawl atall and waited till 15 months to walk but i didn't worry coz he was happy

CantSleepWontSleep · 20/02/2008 07:51

It really is down to the individual, and nothing to do with birth weight.

Dd was 9lb at birth, sat unaided at 4 months, commando crawled by 7 months, walked just before 11 months.
