Inconsolable screaming upon waking- 18 months help

My 18 month old the past few days upon waking wether it’s morning, noon, middle of night keeps waking and screaming inconsolabley for around 15-20 mins. Nothing and I mean nothing can help comfort him. He wants to be picked up we do and then he’s wanting to get down. Everything we offer he throws in temper.

im worried as I’ve never really seen this behaviour before. Is it trantrums or something else?

he does suffer with reflux still and is on Omeprazole and we’ve had to up it, he is teething bottom fangs.

he is speech delayed and OH thinks he’s autistic because our eldest is and it runs in the family. He is speech delayed so does not talk or point but does recognise name, understands commands etc.

I however do not know but it’s horrible to see. Nothing will comfort him. If it’s pain it seems really severe and it’s just awful. Currently awake after 20 mins of non stop screaming and he finally he has a drink and then stops

any advice

My DS did this for a while and the only thing that helped was a drink.

If he's speech delayed and you suspect ASD have you spoken to the HV or GP yet?

Have a look at this SLT progress checker, it will tell you if he needs any additional support. They also have a helpline and resources for parents in their website.

I'd talk to your HV about the results and also ask for a hearing test. He'll need one before being referred for SLT.

I'd also ask your HV to do the 18 month ASQ check.

As for your DH, ASD can be hereditary so there's a theory that some children get picked up later because their Parents have ASD and can't see anything different with his the DC behave.

So he had a hearing test a few months ago and nothing of concern was raised.

I haven’t spoke to the HV yet but I will call them this week.

I see a lot of differences between DS1 and DS2 now in the sense if I look back now I could tell DS1 was autistic when he was younger and tbh I did suspect it as he regressed in speech and language and was very rigid which he still is however DS2 is sooo different in the sense he can pretend play, really socialable, eye contact is good and he does understand what we ask him to do so that’s why I’m unsure.

thanks for the links I’ll check them out now
