23 month old is shy

Help! My child started what you’d call “shy” and reserved at about 9 months he would cry at anyone who came into our house, always fine outside. Since being at nursery (3 days a week) he’s definitely improved and settled well there (still sometimes get the tears on drop off but assured he’s fine once in the room and comes out happy) If people come to ours he’s usually very quiet until he eventually warms up. He’s fine when we go to play centres or coffee shops etc. The main issue I have is his grandma, he hardly sees her so when goes he either doesn’t speak for an hr (if I’m there) or he cries so bad my other half ends up leaving. If a “ stranger” tries to speak to him and he’s not keen he will turn away or stare at them in silence or other times he can be waving shouting hiya at them he’s so hot and cold haha 🤦‍♀️🙃
anyway back to his grandma… I don’t think he’s ever been keen🫠🫣 but I’m not sure what to do? He’s such a gorgeous boy but I feel like literally me, my other half, nursery and my mum are the only ones who see the real him! I’m fully aware this is probably part of his personality, I too keep myself to myself Im just wondering if other kids have been through this and what helped?
Any advice?

It does all sound pretty normal behaviour for his age. I wouldn't try and push his relationship with his DGM, but I'm sure you don't anyway.

Let him sit in your knee, take a favourite activity, a quiet one he can do beside you like colouring or playing with cars and let him warm up in his own time.

Last time I went with them and he sat on my knee in silence but recently I’ve not been and he’s been crying hysterically at his dad but OH says when he leaves he stops. I’m not going to force anything it is what it is we all have people we aren’t keen on 🤣🤣🤣
he’s definitely the type to watch and observe and will come to people on his terms.
