Breastfed baby weight gain

Just wondering if anyone else has experienced similar and how they rectified it...
Baby was born on the 75th percentile and dropped to the 50th after 1 week. Since then he's gradually put on weight but not close to what he's supposed to (probably averaging 16g a day) and is currently in the 25th percentile. If his weight continues this slowly next week he'll be in the 9th.

He was tongue tied but fixed after 1 1/2 weeks. He feeds every 2/3 hours. Feeding seems fine and latch is good (been looked at by numerous people).
Has plenty of wet nappies and does crazy poos at least 1 massive one a day.

At his 6 week assessment he's jumped up to the 91st percentile for height so I'm wondering if he's growing too quickly and there's not enough calories in my milk for him?
I am now expressing after feeding and giving bottles in between BFing but i think that is unsustainable long term and if his weight doesn't jump up I'm considering adding in formula. Worried I'll stunt his growth or something.

Any thoughts? Thanks.

There is definitely enough calories in your BM @Usedtobechilled.

Yes it could just be that he's getting tall. Are you and his DF tall?

Usedtobechilled · 20/01/2023 16:17

Yea pretty tall, 5ft 10 and 6ft 4 so was expecting him to be a bit longer but it's incredibly dishethat he's dropping down the graph even though he feeds when he's hungry so I almost feel like we're having to force feed him. Every time his eyes have been open today there's either a bottle or a boob in his mouth 🤦‍♀️

Do they still put the equation in their Red book where you can work out their estimated adult height?

My BF's DS has been just the same all of his life but his projected adult height was 6'7". He's an adult now and still long and skinny.

I think that you are going to have to look at other ways of seeing if he's getting enough, like is he bright and alert at times and is he meeting his milestones?

Sometimes you need to look at the baby and not the scales Wink

Have a read of Is my older baby getting enough milk?

And it might be worth just having him checked to see if the TT has reattached Wink

Yes he hit his 6 week milestones and passed his assessment so there's no concern there. He's bright, smiling and making sounds, it is literally just his weight that is a concern, I'm pretty worried that he will continue to drop percentiles but I don't know how to keep up feeding and expressing in the long term.

I don't think there is an equation, at least it hasn't been mentioned to me if there is one.

Oh they used to put an equation on the Red book, sounds like they've stopped that.

I still think it sounds as though he's getting enough. Have a read of this article from Kellymom and see what you think.
