2 year old barely plays with toys

My 2 year old has never really been into playing with toys and I had hoped that it would get better as he gets older but it’s just not.

we’ve got a variety of different toys, puzzles and games as well as role play things like a toy kitchen. He just can not hold his attention for longer than 5 mins and then he’s bored jumping around on the sofa and doing anything but playing.

any tips on how we can encourage him to play with the toys a bit more and play more independently?

im really struggling and due another baby next year and not sure how I will manage with 2 of them when my son struggles to play by himself for more than 5 mins.

I also wondered the same thing when my DD turned 2, nothing could her attention for long but she’s recently started playing independently and being interested in things for longer than 5 minutes… she’s 2.5 now.

Thanks for your reply. I’m hoping he may get more interested in toys then based on your experience 😁

Do you rotate the toys by putting some in a cupboard and bringing out different things every couple of weeks? That can work. Also I find leaving toys on the floor for them to "discover" held their attention more than me for example handing them a toy and trying to get them interested in it. Before I went to bed every night I would set up some random stuff on the floor for my DD to find in the morning. A mixture of toys, empty boxes and random kitchen implements like a whisk - stuff like that!

I also found going out for a walk round the block helped when it got to the sofa climbing time of day. She always came back from the walk happier to sit down and play with something.
