Speech delay / Small vocabulary

Hello,
my little boy of 2 years and 9 months is apparently speech "delayed".

It has a vocabulary of around 40 useful words that grows slowly.
He often puts two or three words together.
In addition, it imitates sounds of dozens of animals, cars, etc.

We have already discarded any issue of behavior, autism, hearing problems and even some genetic ones.

He recently started treatment with a speech therapist.

My concern at the moment is that his vocabulary is too "simple" compared to other kids his age.

Has anyone else gone through this?

We've been through it too @vega86

How are you getting on with SLT?

My son has/had a speech delay. We have been under speech therapy for almost 2 years. He now has a wide vocabulary but his pronunciation is a bit slurry so can be difficult to decipher the words sometimes.

Within the 40 words are you counting the animal sounds and vehicle sounds? I was surprised to learn that these count as words so this might increase the amount he knows?

I was told to use the plus one approach. So whatever he says add one to it. So if he said "blue car" I would say "fast blue car". Over time this extended his vocabulary and sentence length.

I found it hard to keep track of my son's progress and how many words he can say. I now use the speech delay app Pippin. It has a word tracker which allows makes it so easy to track his words. It also has lots of speech games and books to try at home. I would recommend giving it a try:

Hello @PritiPatelsMaker
We are from Brazil, the speech therapist has helped a lot, but I don't know if that's what you mean when you say SLT.
How did you help your little one?

Hello @LucyBrown88 , thank you very much for the tips and sharing the app.
This exchange of experience is comforting.

He has 40 spoken words, not counting sounds and imitations.
If you count both, surely the number of words would be greater.
Even so, his pronunciation for some phonemes is poor.
For example, you have difficulty pronouncing words with 3 syllables or more.

Most of his 40-word vocabulary is simple words: mom, dad, water, foot, hand, finger, nose, grandpa, grandma, knife, egg, kiss, juice, etc...

@PritiPatelsMaker Yes! He started SLT a few weeks ago.
He is evolving little by little.

My opinion is that his vocabulary is still very small and words with 3 or more syllables have a bad pronunciation =/
