When does a baby's eye colour change?

I just wondered if anyone knew?

It doesn't really matter, I know, but ds is 7 weeks old and I was wondering if his eyes would have already started to change if they were going to go brown? Perhaps if they haven't started changing by now then he is definitely blue eyed?

No idea but DD is 8 months and her eyes are still changing colour - can look blue / green / brown / a mix of all. Not sure what she'ss end up with!

CarrieG · 30/11/2004 16:44

No, but I'd like to know! Ds' eyes are a different colour every day & he's 4 months. I'd LIKE him to be my blue eyed boy as otherwise he doesn't resemble me at all - image of my father in law in fact - but dh reckons they might yet go brown like his...

I hate to say this but DS was almost 3 years old before we could tell. I thought they'd be dark brown like DH but in fact at about 3 they turned from the 'baby black' to blue like mine

twiglett · 30/11/2004 17:49

DS had blue eyes until about 8 months when they went chocolate brown overnight

I believe it's up to a year and a half they can change

JoolsToo · 30/11/2004 17:56

secur - mine are green - like deep limpid pools

I found your subliminal messages by the way!

efmach · 30/11/2004 18:02

I seem to remember that my son's eyes were blue for ages and then gradually turned green by the time he was 3.

libb · 30/11/2004 18:37

DS's were blue/brown at birth and definitely chocolate brown now (despite what the mad old bag in the card shop said at the weekend). They could turn a brighter shade like his dad's but I doubt they will be blue like mine - thank goodness. I just love brown eyes.

Distracted · 01/12/2004 09:20

Oh my goodness, I had no idea it could really take so long or be so variable! My dd has blue eyes and I know that they still changed from the dark blue they are all born with to a much clearer lighter blue, but that was somewhere in the first few months.

Ds can only go blue or dark brown, not green or hazel, so maybe that's more likely to happen quicker - although 8 months twiglett.

Libb - how old is your ds?

depends. And some people are born with brown eyes as well.

misdee · 01/12/2004 09:25

dd1 had brown eyes since birth, no smokey baby eyes with her.

dd2 had the smokey eyed look till about 4months but hers are brown.

christmaskitty · 04/12/2004 00:11

wow didn't realise they were so late

DD has a dark blue at the moment (4 months) mine are a bit lighter than hers DP's are chocolate brown she's his spitting image as it is I was hoping she would at least have my eye colour

merrymarthamoo · 04/12/2004 00:15

Ds2's were dark blue (navy) when he was born, and up 'til quite recently I was at a loss as to how to describe them - sort of greeny/hazelly/bluey/grey-y colour. I genuinely couldn't have said "ds2's eyes are X colour." Suddenly, however, they are very definitely brown - and he's three on Tuesday. So my personal opinion is that there is no such thing as the blue eyes 'til 6 months then wham bam overnight change!

ghostofchristmaspast · 04/12/2004 04:43

DS had bright sky blue eyes from birth pretty much ... photos of him at 3 months show the colour of his eyes very clearly and haven't changed since then (he has just turned 5).

DD is now 10 months and her eye colour is still out with the jury. She started off with new born blue ... and were a bluey grey until about 5 months. Then they started to get a tinge of green in and now they are dark but I couldn't call them proper brown. They are a mossy greeny brown ...
People comment on her unusual eye colour.

smellymelly · 04/12/2004 09:28

Ds had bright blue eyes till he was 2, 2.5. Now they are grey/green. I never thought they would change that late. (he is now 5)

JanH · 04/12/2004 18:21

My kids all had definitely blue eyes when they were little but started changing as they got older - I couldn't say exactly when but much older than 2. Now they all (4) have variations on green/grey/blue with just one quite a bit bluer than the others.

SantasLittleEgypt · 05/12/2004 18:08

merrymarthamoo, my dd is 6 months and she is just as you have described - navy at birth, now green/brown/hazel, don't know really. hoping she will go brown as mine are very dark brown. dh's are light blue but she's def not that colour. her hair is q strawberry blonde though.
