No crawling, no walking, happy 11month old

DS is 11 months, tall for his age and very cheerful but doesn't crawl, bottom shuffle or walk. Should I be worried? He likes standing up and can sit down by himself but not get to a standing position alone very well.

I remember posting about my dd when she was the same and everyone's advice was to relax cos she'll do it in her own time, but talk to your HV if worried! So that just about covers it all!

She did do it all in her own time-never crawled at all, didn't really bother with bum-shuffling even though she could and then walked at 17 months like she'd been doing it for ages! She never fell over or stumbled at all-it was just like she wouldn't do it until she could do it properly.
Still stubborn now but in a very verbal way!
Hope that helps?

My DS just commando-crawled until he was 1 - then he crawled properly and didn't start walking until he was 16 months!

DD1, never stood up, crawled or walked or moved from whatever spot I sat her in. She quite literally stood up with the aid of a desk and took her first four steps on her first birthday.

Agree with what's already been said - don't think its anything to be worried about, but if you are concerned talk to your HV.

Dd2 is eleven months, can sort of bottom-shuffle, but that's it! Can't crawl, stand, roll over or get into a sitting position by herself.

I have two older ones who were just the same, and they're fine (finally walked at 18 months and 20 months). Apparently age of walking etc. is highly heritable, so you could ask your mum/MIL at what age you/dh did these things.

Unless there are specific reasons to suspect problems, don't worry. Enjoy the fact that ds can't yet dismantle a room in fifteen seconds. If people ask silly questions, tell them he's too busy solving the Middle East crisis to bother with mere walking. Shuts them up every time.

marsup-my ds never crawled or shuffled either,he just got up and walked at 14 months.Very weird!!

He's now 2.3 and still doesn't crawl well when playing on the floor.

I wouldn't worry,if he's weight bearing then he's on track to start soon.

flopseybunny · 29/11/2004 23:09

DS at 11 months was only learning to sit, and was able to shuffle backwards. now 14 mnths and still no walking but is able to stand. i dont think you've anything to worry about, it takes time.

Hi,

Don't worry, your DS will do it all in his own time. Some babies are content to be babies and will happily watch the world go by without feeling the need to rush and join in. Others are not content until they are jostling for first place.
If your son can take his weight on his feet (and from your post it seems that he can) then eventually he will walk. Some never crawl and others (like my DS) crawl at 5 months (but there is a history of this in the family). Believe me when I say make the most of it - he'll be mobile before you know it and then all the things he's been looking at for 11 months (you know - plug sockets etc) will be ripe for further inspection.
Have a word with your HV if you're worried.

This is really reassuring - it is great to hear of other cases that are similar, and interesting that it is so often inherited. Dh apparently only walked at 19months and didn't do much crawling before that - he had a little truck he used to paddle around on and so does DS (he can go backwards and forwards but not sideways, so I try to position the truck at the right angle to keep our bookshelves safe - there are advantages!). I don't feel I need to see a HV when I have mumsnet for advice! Thanks to all of you.

PS today he decided to practice sitting down and standing up again... and sitting down and standing up again...and sitting down and standing up again...So he must know what he's doing.

marsup, aren't those called squats?

I think he is going to surprise you by going straight to skis

I am fully qualified to make jokes about this subject, my ds1 didn't walk until 19.5months, lazy bugger

Heathcliffscathy · 30/11/2004 21:49

hello pph

princesspeahead · 30/11/2004 21:51

hello soph, where have you been hiding? and how is your yummy little man?

santaclary · 01/12/2004 17:15

marsup my ds1 started crawling at 11mo. He as i have posted before is not the very best at gross motor tho he walks and runs fine now...was late hopper, skipper etc.
He has very soft and flexible joints which we think is why. He's fine tho.
If your ds as others say is bearing his weight then that is very good. He sounds fine tbh.

Carameli · 01/12/2004 20:49

My dd is now 14mnths and has started crawling a bit when she was about 11mnths. Like others have said make the best of it because once they start to crawl and cruise around they are into absolutely everything. She just pulls everything out and then takes delight in handing it to me...

She walks with her vtech walker and can do a few steps on her own but is in no rush to walk on her own yet and I am not concerned. My dh is strssed that she is not walking yet but I told him that as a teacher I have yet to see any infant children crawling into class.

I think like someone said as long as they can bear weight on their legs. Ask your hv for reassurance if worried though, will set your mind at rest at least.
