Hoping this will get a few responses as I try in the SN boards and rarely get more than 1 or 2 replies.
I am wondering if anybody else’s child is like this or was like this around this age?
My son is 3.5 almost and is awaiting an ASD diagnosis. I could be wrong but I will be shocked if he isn’t somewhere on the spectrum as he has a lot of autistic traits which I first started to notice and worry about when he was around 2/2.5. He often span (although seems to have grown out of this), looked at things intensely, always waved his hands in front of his face, didn’t give hardly any eye contact and didn’t respond to his name - just to name a few.
Anyway, the main thing I worry about is his speech. He talks LOADS but it is only repeating things he’s heard. Since he was about 18/20 months old he’s known the entire alphabet, could
count to 20, shapes, colours, animals etc. fast forward to 3.5 and he knows the order of the planets, can count backwards, knows shapes such as hexagon, parallelogram.. I’ve always thought he was a genius.
Problem is, he does not communicate at all, it’s like he just doesn’t know how. His understanding is really poor. He has started to have really upsetting meltdowns when he cannot communicate his wants/needs. During these meltdowns he will repeat things like ‘hello’ ‘byebye’ ‘peekaboo’ just anything he knows to try and get you to understand him.
He is under SALT but our therapist is useless. He’s had one session and that was almost 5 months a go. She promised to send us recourses to help us at home and never did, we had to chase it up about 3 weeks a go. She keeps saying she wants to see him at his nursery but fails to ever ring them to book something in, I’m a little fed up of it all to be quite honest.
