Tips for better behaviour whilst out

My (near 3yrs) son is adorable.... most the time.

When in places he can't really run around (doctors, pharmacies, shops etc) he will not behave. He has meltdowns when I won't let him run around Willy nilly. He kicks, hits, headbutts me through frustration and not getting his own way. He has regularly reduced me to tears as I get so mortified and exhausted of his behaviour etc. It really puts me off taking him out alone (which I don't want to be the case). A lot of the time I end up leaving as soon as I can wherever it is.

I have tried to distract him, pointing out things and asking him questions, counting and similar. I bring food and drink plus his kindle. I have even tried my own phone. I am able to distract him sometimes in a shop by letting him put stuff in the basket but it has a small time limit.

He just gets too excited and wants to run around!

Can anyway give me any tips that I can try to keep his calmer in certain places?
