Bum shuffling babies now older - hand development

Hi, niche questions perhaps but....DS was a bum shuffler, never crawled, walked late. He used his fists to help move him around - like a little monkey really.

He was seeing a paediatrician at the time for other reasons who said bum shuffling not a problem except without placing his weight on spread out palms his hand muscles might not develop and he could struggle eg with holding a pen.

Well he's 10 now and never struggled holding a pen, but does seem to have real problems with shoe laces, ties - can't seem to ever get them taut, and get his fingers in the right place. Its causing him a lot of frustration (and me!)

I wondered if any other ex-bum shufflers were similar? I'm thinking of finding some exercises he could do to build up that strength/dexterity.

Yes my nephew’s the same. Struggles with pen, laces. His pediatrician recommended rock climbing, baking bread and building playdoh to build hand, finger and grip strength.

That's interesting thank you. I'll look in to the exercises - I did take him climbing a couple of times, but he didn't enjoy it - may be some strengthening exercises would help start him off and build from there.
