Tantrums vs meltdowns

i have a 4 year old boy and over the last wee while have noticed really intense meltdown/ tantrums. I’m having trouble trying to navigate whether they are just typical 4 year old tantrums or something more? He gets incredibly frustrated, screaming and lashing out- it does usually stem from things not going his way, having to leave or his friends not doing what he wants them to but he really gets into such a state I’m sure he loses all control and he almost looks possessed and there’s just no reasoning with him.
He goes to a childminder and we have both noticed some “quirky” behaviours ie issues with loud noises, crowds etc. I’m struggling to navigate what I should be doing really I feel like I’m over analysing everything.
