Should I be worried?

He's almost 20 months and only says about 6-7 words. Car, cow, bubbles, etc.

He understands a lot and can follow actions like let's go upstairs, let's go to the high chair etc.

I am always pointing out what we're doing/things and pictures in books etc but he's so stubborn! He makes sounds like woof and miaow etc at dogs/cats. Also babbles a lot he's very vocal!

Anything in particular I can do to get him saying more words? His next health check isn't until he's 2.

My DD’s speech was similar at that age. She said a few more words by her 2nd birthday but her speech really took off at 2 years and 1 month. She’s 2 years and 3 months now and doesn’t stop talking 😂

Sounds like your DS is doing fine, his speech will come. ☺️

If his understanding is good, he has a few words (and animal noises count as words at this age), and he's using some gestures to communicate (pointing, waving, etc.), then it's very likely that the words will come. There's just such a huge range of normal when it comes to speech at this age.
