17 month old not talking at all!

Hi,
Looking for some reassurance please

I have a gorgeous 17 month old lb who is incredibly active, has great understanding and is very affectionate etc, but he says absolutely no words at all. Doesn't babble much either apart from the odd mamamama, he grunts a lot and communicates what he wants by either pointing or holding my hand and leading me to something.

Now I've spoken to the HV and she's told me I need to wait until he's 2 for his 2 year assessment 🙄 I can't afford to go private for speech therapy either

Has anyone else had a toddler who is similar to mind and went on to talk absolutely fine? I just want to put my mind at ease that he will get there eventually!

Anyone?

My son is only 22 months now and not speaking in proper sentences yet so I can't say conclusively that he 'went on to talk absolutely fine' BUT he had precisely ZERO words at 18 months, lots of babble but didn't even say Mumma with meaning. By 20 months he said 30 words and over a hundred a month or so after that. It seemed to happen literally overnight.

Thank you! That's quite reassuring. My son doesn't even babble though to be honest, we have the odd mama, I can't tell if it's in context or not. The rest of the time is grunts and moaning x

With the lack of much babbling the first thing is probably to get his hearing checked, so I'd ask about that and take it from there.

Understanding language and using non verbal communication are both very good signs.

He's on the waiting list for a hearing test at the moment, hopefully it happens soon

Mine just scraped 6 words at 18m but had well over 50 at 24m.

Hi @Gabriella93 can I ask how you're getting on? X

Gabriella93 · 08/08/2022 13:34

Hi @Cluelessmum5
I had a visit from the HV and he's on the waiting list for a hearing test, but god knows how long that'll be. I'm not 100% convinced it is his hearing.
The HV wasn't concerned about anything else, just said he may be a bit slower to speak.
He's almost 20 months old now and is babbling a lot, saying mamamama and sometimes dadadada, he can do sign language for "more" and does a couple of animal noises, but those aren't consistent .
I tried to self refer him to speech and language therapy but they weren't worried either, so I just have to wait I guess 🤷‍♀️

It does make me sad when I see his peers chatting away to their mums but I think he's close to talking now 🙏

Thank you for checking in x

@Gabriella93 aww not at all. I have read so many of these threads in the last few weeks and 9 times out of 10 you don't know what happens so I hope you don't mind me enquiring. Sounds like your little one is on the verge of a word explosion!! All the best x

Rainbowbaby13 · 08/08/2022 17:26

My niece didn't start talking until she was 2 and there's no stopping her she's 3 and you can't get her to be quiet 😂
