I’m unsure if my daughter’s speech is progressing at the right rate or not.
She is almost 18 months and can probably say around 15 different words such as: duck, mama, nana, car, dog, cat, key, shoe, hat she can say woof and quack I’m not sure if they count as words and there’s others which don’t sound that clear
When she is saying the words the sound isn’t really completed in all her words so for dog she says ‘do’ cat and car she will say ‘ca’ but there is the sound difference that you would expect if the whole word was to be said. For her bunny she just says ‘ba’
If I show her flash cards she can do about 12 words it’s just they aren’t all clear or formed properly.
She points out things and says dog or duck (for every single bird!)
Does this sound ok? I’m unsure about the incomplete word thing.

I should add that she has an excellent understanding and follows instructions very well. She laughs when other people laugh and looks concerned if an adult looks worried or sad

My daughter is 17 months old and the same as yours (although not as many words).
From what I have read incomplete words are normal... they are both so little still!!

My sons 17 months, nearly 18 months and the same as yours.

We've got mama, dada, nana, banana, hiya, yeah, no, moo for cow, teeth, bear, cooper (the dog), Ted (his cousin), girl, cheese, ball. Then a load of babble I don't understand but he's clearly trying cause he points and talks.

I've never worried about mines speech. I'm sure I read they tend to have an explosion of words after 18 months 🤷🏻‍♀️

She has a great vocab! I’m no expert but just based on my reading- incomplete words in context and animal sounds count as words☺️

I also think she sounds right on track, and yes, animal sounds count – I think 5-20 words is typical at 18 months (although there's a huge range at this age, quite a few have no words, some are stringing words together). All birds were ducks here too for awhile!

Saying only (an approximation of) the first syllable is also extremely common, and will generally sort itself out in the next year or so.
