Hi everyone , my son is almost three years old and has started stammering november last year. In the last few weeks it seemed to of disappeared but now it’s back again even worse and he has started holding his hand over his mouth when he does it which I’m guessing is to try and cover it up , do you think he is self conscious? His speech was delayed at the 1 year/18 month check and then he caught up and speech became advanced for his age quickly -so perhaps this is the cause. I contacted HV who is going to refer him to speech therapy. It takes him so long to get a word out and I just feel so helpless and bad for him , should I be saying anything whilst he’s trying to talk ie “it’s ok take your time “ “I’m listening” or do I just say nothing ? Anyone else’s child had this and it carried on into school years?

Yes and he still has it as an adult. Started at the same age as your child. However, we were told that most children grow out of it so please try not to worry.
