8 month old not yet sitting unsupported...

My 8 month old daughter holds her head up fine and has started rolling along the floor but she is still not able to sit on her own. She can sit against the couch for a few seconds and then flops down to one side and ends up lying down - should I be worried?...

My dd was exactly the same. At 8 months she still needed supported by cushions etc when sitting. Think she was around 9ish months before she really got the hang of it. She was walking at a year so it's amazing how they catch up. I wouldnt worry at the moment.

I wouldn't worry either at this stage. My dd (now 10 months) only started sitting on her own at about 9 months. Even now she will preferentially lie down sometimes (tricky when you are trying to dress her!). And she doesn't roll over at all, unless by accident, at which point she wails for assistance. Forget crawling. It hasn't even occurred to her. And as for standing, hold her above the floor and she either actively lifts her legs up, or just collapses at the knees. On the bright side, lack of mobility means I can put her down and know she will be there when I come back. It's proving very useful, as we are decorating.......

echo the others don't worry! my ds is 8 months in a weeks time and cannot sit up at all. Funnily enough he can crawl and has been crawling for the last 3 weeks. My dd on the other hand was sitting up at 6 months but didn't crawl till she was ten months. Babies are funny things.

There's been a thread in the last few days about the ages at which children sit ... until I read that I'd thought that DD had been a late sitter (way back in the mists of time, well, three years ago) but no longer do! She sat the day after she turned eight months, and there were plenty later than that. She was a lot like Arriety's daughter by the sounds of it ... rising four now, perfectly normal if a bit lazy (can't imagine WHERE she gets that from).

dont be worried

one of my charges didnt sit unsupported til over 12 months

didnt walk til 17

she is now 4 and just the same as any oterh 4 year old.

She always was normal anyway ofcourse some babies do things fatser than others

I wouldn't worry about it either.Ds2 is nearly 9 months and can't sit unaided yet.Ds1 was also late in sitting, crawling, walking and talking but soon made up for it.He is now on the go from the moment he wakes up til bed time and talks non stop. They all reach their 'milestones' when they're good and ready.

Sushipaws · 07/01/2008 20:40

My dd is 9 months and has only just learned to sit unaided. She started crawling at 7 months so I wasn't too worried. Some of the other same age babies in my post natal group can't sit unaided and can't crawl yet. Everyone develops at different times.

My DD only started sitting at 10 months and I was worried sick. Even asked for a private referral to see a paediatrician. Well, sods law being as it is, she sat unaided for the very first time and for a full 3 minutes just before we left for the appointment!

I know its tough when all their peers seem to be leaping ahead in their development (particularly at this early stage where the milestones seem to come thick and fast), but honestly they all go at their own rate and they catch up with each other in the end.

Ubergeekian · 07/01/2008 22:21

Don't worry about it. And if any other parents get smug about it, a line I have found to be very effective is "Yours did hold her head up / sit / stand very quickly, didn't s/he? Of course, having such a small head must help."

Thanks everyone - especially like your advice Ubergeekian!! feel much better now. I tend to have to have something to worry about...

My 8 month old doesn't sit, roll, crawl etc he's fine tho and i don't worry. DS1 was the same he seemed to do everything at once about 9 months i think.

sohail30 · 08/02/2022 12:27
