Toddler more confident when out with dad than mum?

My toddler (2.5) goes to a couple of different groups a week. Sometimes I take him and sometimes DH. Twice now it has been commented on by people there that he seems more confident when with DH (running around more/being a bit more adventurous) and when I take him he stays closer to me and isn't as keen to go off on his own as much.
I'm wondering why this might be and whether anyone else has experienced this before? I do encourage him to go off by himself but often he wants to stay close to me.

I would say it's cos daddy is maybe more fun cos my sons can be the same. But all kids want mummy for cuddles etc
