MONSTERS

Like many kids of her age, my DD1 (nearly 4) has a thing for monsters....loves them, in that she adores stories with monsters, and hates them, cos they're scary.

She's gotten out of her bed and come into ours intermittently since was able (i.e. since she's been in a bed) and whilst sometimes she says very casually it's because she thinks there's a monster in her room, very occasionally like last night, I find the poor love in tears and shaking . (Either way, she inevitably gets her way and sleeps in our bed.)

Now, DP and I have always approached her concerns by saying there's no such thing as monsters, they're only in stories etc. We've taken the line that if we tell her for example that we have special 'anti-monster' spray that this is just fuelling her idea that they really do exist.

Now I'm not so sure...should I address her fears on her terms - i.e. telling her how we would deal with a visit from a monster or should we continue the line that there's no such thing??

Had same problem with DD. She used to climb the mountain - come into our loft bedroom - to escape the monsters. She is much better since I said she could have a (really glittery) sticker if she stayed in her bed all night. Works a treat!

erm, we just tell my ss, that monsters don't exist....works for him (aged 6)...dd too young to have to go thru that yet? sorry can't be of much more help....erm let me think, does she have a night light, so she can see no monsters? has she seen monsters inc? (could get her a sulley of her own? to scare monsters for her? if you want to take that tack!) Just thinking back to when I was a kid, thought I had dinosaurs behind my nice long 70's curtains! used to seal the side of my bed in with teddies.....like that would help against a dinosaur attack!
