Teacher thinks ds10 has ADHD

Could I hear from those whose child was diagnosed around this age and how it has affected/benefited them and if life has changed since.
Ds2 has always been gifted academically but struggled with social situations and we also struggled with behaviour at home.
A couple of years back we almost did start the process with gp but after talking to his then teacher who kept going back to how bright he is and how much he is able to communicate his feelings it’s probably just developmental and he will catch up.
His current teacher has a special needs child (also a not special needs child although she has not told me this ) and I feel she has taken him under her wings and has been brilliant but incidents have become very regular and today she had asked me how I would feel about getting him assessed. I agree that I would start the ball rolling as if he does have ADHD I would really like to get him the help before he starts secondary.
Any advice or recommendations would be appreciated.
Also just waiting for health insurance details would anyone recommend going private to speed the process?

I think you might get more responses if you post in the SN section on here are as there will be MNers with diagnosed DC who can answer your questions.

It does sound like a good idea to start the process before Secondary school though Thanks

I would definitely get him assessed as if he doesn’t have ADHD then that will be confirmed - and if he does have it, then the diagnosis should hopefully bring understanding and help for the particular issues he has.
